The investigation into financial irregularities at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital was launched after the rape and murder of a junior doctor, which placed the hospital’s administration under intense scrutiny.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday raided the residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA and Kolkata Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh in connection with alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital. Ghosh, the Kashipur-Belgachhia legislator, was a member of the hospital’s Rogi Kalyan Samiti (patient welfare committee).
Around 2 pm, three vehicles carrying CBI officers and central armed forces personnel reached Ghosh’s North Kolkata residence. Officials confirmed that he was present at the time and is being questioned by investigators.
The corruption probe at RG Kar Hospital began after the rape and murder of a junior doctor on August 9 last year, which brought the hospital’s administration under intense scrutiny and sparked massive protests. Investigators allege that funds allocated for hospital operations were misappropriated.
The CBI took over the case following an order from the Calcutta High Court. Earlier, former principal of RG Kar Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, 53, was arrested in connection with the same investigation and remains in judicial custody.
